Singapore is one of the best placed islands around for access to golf in South East Asia. Not only does Singapore have many world class courses of its own, it is also a stones throw away from golf on the Indonesian islands of Bintan and Batam, as well as a short drive from excellent courses in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. And this is all without mentioning the ease of a short flight to Vietnam or Thailand.
We thought we’d have a look at the day trip options open to Singapore based golfers or holiday makers visiting Singapore, and looking for a round of golf. On the weekend, it may be difficult or very expensive to get a visitor rate at most courses in Singapore, so many golfers flock to the various ferry terminals every Saturday and Sunday morning, on their way to Bintan or Batam for a days golf. Others choose to drive over either one of two bridges to play one of the many courses in Johor Bahru. And recently, Desaru Coast has been redeveloped, with the Els Club offering golfers some outstanding golf over two 18 hole courses.
Bintan
Bintan is about a 45 minute ferry ride from Singapore, with all ferries to Bintan leaving from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. Most day trip packages include express immigration, and once you check your golf bag in at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, you basically don’t need to worry about it again until you get back to Singapore, with the golf club staff handling everything.
There are now two, 18 hole golf courses on Bintan (the two at Bintan Lagoon recently closed down) Ria Bintan and Laguna Golf Bintan. Both Ria Bintan and Laguna Golf Bintan have had work done to them in the last few years (with Laguna Golf Bintan being completely refurbished into an excellent, challenging course), and are both in great condition. Ria Bintan has for a long time been recognised as one of the best courses in Asia, and should be on any keen golfers ‘to play’ list. A day trip to Bintan is always great fun, and the day trip packages offered by the golf courses there make it incredibly easy and affordable to do. Bintan day trip packages can be quickly and easily booked via Tee Time Saver.
Batam
Another 35 – 50 minute ferry ride (depending on which ferry terminals you are going from and to) is Batam, also rich with golf courses offering excellent day trip options. Ferries to Batam either depart from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal or Harbourfront Ferry Terminal, and are bound for one of 3 ferry terminals in Batam depending on which golf course you are playing.
Padang Golf Sukajadi is the newest of the courses on Batam, and is usually in great condition. The greens are some of the best on any of the Indonesian islands, and definitely worth playing if you are planning on golfing in Batam. It also has a Raddisson Hotel attached to it, making it great for a golfing weekend.
Palm Springs offers three 9 hole courses by the water, while SouthLinks and Tering Bay both offer tricky 18 hole layouts. In a similar fashion to Bintan, all of these courses know how to look after you well. With their day trip packages including express immigration and golf bag handling, ensuring you have the easiest golf trip imaginable.
Batam day trip packages can also be quickly and easily booked via Tee Time Saver.
Johore Bahru
Johore Bahru is the Southern most state of Malaysia, only a short distance from Singapore by car (over one of two bridges) or ferry. As far as golf goes, Singapore golfers are spoiled with a wide variety of golf courses only a short distance away.
Horizon Hills is a course everyone looking to play golf in Johore Bahru should consider given it is widely regarded as one of the best courses in Malaysia. Host to a yearly Asian Tour event, this course offers a great test for golfers and is always in excellent condition, with some of the best greens in the region. It's also one of the most conveniant to get to, only a 15 min drive from the Tuas Checkpoint.
Johore's latest additions aren't in Johore Bahru, but just next door in Desaru, in The Els Club Desaru Coast with its Valley and Ocean courses. Golfers can opt to either drive or take a ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (90 Minutes) and then get collected by the golf courses bus at the ferry terminal.
